Woodpeckers class is for our Y5/6 children. Children in this class are taught by two experienced teachers, Mrs Farrer, on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mrs Amey on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. They have teaching assistant support from Mrs Webb and Mrs Longman. There is a focus topic for each half term or term, generally based around History or Geography but linked into other subject areas such as Art and DT. More information on the Curriculum can be found under the Learning tab.
On Monday mornings and Friday afternoons Woodpeckers have PE sessions - indoor PE on Mondays (dance or gym) and outdoor on Fridays (games or athletics). They also have a 6 week block of swimming lessons on a Wednesday or Friday afternoon at some point during the year.
Children in Woodpeckers Class are encouraged to develop independent learning skills through regularly using our four internet based learning sites - Active Learn, Mathletics, Times Tables Rock Stars and Spelling Shed. Links to these can be found on the website under the Pupil tab. Children are also encouraged to read each day; to practise spellings and to learn their times tables.
In school, Woodpeckers are encouraged to take responsibility for aspects of school life such as running the tuck shop, organising collective worship each day and writing the newsletter. To prepare them for the move to secondary school, pupils in Y5 and Y6 have a number of taster or transition days to both Honywood and Stanway Secondary Schools. Transition visits to other local schools can be arranged on request.
