Off by Heart Poetry Competition

We are proud to announce the launch of our first Off By Heart Poetry Competition!

For this competition we are asking all the children to learn one poem from the list below 'Off By Heart' over the Easter break. The children will be reciting their poems in class and the two winning entries from each class will go through to the Grand Final in the hall on Friday 26th April 2019 at 2.15pm - parents are welcome to join us for this event.  This is sure to be a terrific event and I look forward to hearing the children perform. We are hoping that 3 of our Governors will act as independent judges and there will be a prize for 1st, 2nd, 3rd across all ages plus certificates for everyone who enters.        Judges will be looking for children who:

  • Speak their poem clearly
  • Make sure the volume is loud enough to be heard
  • Use expression and rhythm
  • Vary volume, pace and expression for effect
  • Use dramatic pauses
  • Use simple movement or percussion

All the poems can be accessed on this page of the website - please click on the list below. Key Stages are just a guide - children can choose whichever poem they like.   The best way of learning a poem is not to try and do it all at once - little and often, line by line, is often the best approach.  Staff and parents are also encouraged to have a go as this will also give the children encouragement!
